Koi Sushi is hands down my favorite sushi restaurant, not just Orange County but anywhere I’ve been in the world. Not that I’m a big globetrotter or anything but I have been enough places to draw comparison. I have been eating here for around 8 years and these days I eat here at least once per week. There are several features that will impress you when it come to Koi. They have ultra high quality and diverse sections of fish from across the world. This is the only Sushi restaurant I have been to that stocks Wild Caught Salmon regularly, and if they don’t have Wild Salmon they have Tasmanian Ocean Trout which is similar to Salmon and equally delicious. The other feature that I want to highlight is the meticulous attention to detail and quality of the Chefs and the owner, Kunio Go. I have never, I repeat never, had a dish bought to my table that wasn’t perfectly presented (As you will see in the photos in this article).
The staff are fantastic. I have come to know the owner Kunio, and a couple of the Chefs, Daigo and Shin over the years and they are just as Authentic as the food. Kunio hails from Tokyo, and immigrated to the United States in 1968. He opened Koi restaurant in 1980 (He has been making Sushi longer than I have been alive). Chefs Daigo and Shin have also been making Sushi just as long and their skill and attention to detail is unparalleled. If you don’t know your way around a traditional sushi restaurant you can always bank on getting a great recommendation from one of the chefs, the owner or one of the very friendly ladies serving. They all have intimate knowledge of the menu and different tastes.
The restaurant not only has great traditional sushi but a phenomenal house salad (Again my favorite salad at any restaurant anywhere) and has some more American/Japanese dishes for those who want to ease themselves in. The dark horse at this restaurant on the menu is the fried chicken wings, they are mind blowing if you feel like being naughty. More treats include fried calamari and green tea ice-cream.
Pricing is very reasonable for any sushi restaurant and an absolute steal if you factor in the quality of the food.
Koi is located on the corner of 5th and Pacific Coast Highway in Seal Beach right next to McDonalds.
